This August, under the blazing Mississippi sun, we pulled into Starkville with a car packed to the brim and hearts full of anticipation. Our daughter was starting her freshman year at Mississippi State University, and we were about to help her move into her dorm—an experience equal parts exciting and emotional.
The Heat and the Hustle
It was one of those classic Southern summer days—humid, sweltering, and buzzing with energy. Families were everywhere, hauling bins, fans, and couches up stairwells and down hallways. Dads were in full DIY mode, assembling elaborate furniture setups like they were auditioning for HGTV. Bed risers, custom shelving, original artwork, LED lights—these dorm rooms were getting serious upgrades.
Settling In
Her room was small but full of promise. We helped unpack her things, hang up photos of friends and family, and make the bed with crisp new sheets. She had a vision for her space, and it was fun watching it come together—her first little home away from home. We were so thankful she gets to share this room with one of her best friends. They have similar tastes and they had every item – including pillows and throw blankets – planned out.
The Goodbye
Move-in day was certainly a long one. Thankfully we had planned on staying overnight and say our goodbyes the following morning. This was definitely a good decision. We had a wonderful breakfast with Gracie. We got to soak up just a couple more hours with her to talk about how many exciting things were coming her way. As we were finishing up breakfast, the excitement gave way to quiet moments. We dropped Gracie off at the gas station across the street from the dorm. This was a good idea since it forced us to keep the goodbye short and sweet. After a group hug that lingered, and a few tears (ours, mostly). She was ready to begin this new chapter, and we were so proud. But watching her walking away back to the dorm, leaving her there, felt like closing the door on a part of our lives we’ll always cherish.
Looking Ahead
We know she’ll thrive at Mississippi State. She’s got the spirit, the drive, and now, the independence. Still, the house feels different without her. Quieter. But also filled with hope—for the person she’s becoming and the adventures that await.
This milestone reminded us that parenting is a journey of letting go, one step at a time. And while we may not be there for every moment now, we’ll always be cheering her on from afar.
Congrats on your first post ❤️ I hope your daughter loves college
